Miurell Perez, a 9-year-old girl from Nicaragua, is our current Compassion International Child. Our Evening Guild, Vestry, and Youth Group each contribute about $11 monthly to her support, which goes for food, clothing, medical attention, social events, and Christian education in schools run by Compassion International. Miurell lives in the plains of Barrio Pedro Joaquin Chamorro, on the Pacific Coast of the country, west of its capital Managua. The climate is tropical, though less so than the eastern coast, which is also known as the Mosquito Coast. Her village has about 4,000. Typical houses have dirt floors, cardboard walls and corrugated iron roofs. Most adults are employed by some work in factories and earn the equivalent of $73 per. Common health problems include respiratory disorders, diarrhea, parasites, malnutrition, fever and vomiting. The Spanish arrived in Nicarauga in 1524. The country gained independence from Spain in 1821and from Mexico in 1838. The political struggles of the Sandinista years, in the 1980's devastated the country's economy. In November 1998, Hurricane Mitch triggered landslides that buried many villages and killed more than 10,000 people
